How did you get into the beauty industry?

I trained in beauty therapy in Manchester and did an evening course in media and theatrical make-up, before working in a photo makeover studio.

What is your greatest achievement?

I learned so much at the Royal Opera House in London and this helped me gain a lot of confidence with the rest of my work. I worked on some very exciting shows and developed both my make-up and wig skills.

HUDDERSFIELD’S TITANIC SPA’S AWARD-WINNING MARKETING STRATEGY BRINGS IN THE CLIENTS AND KEEPS IT IN THE NEWS. SASHA LILL REPORTS

SPA VISION
From a derelict textile mill in North Yorkshire, 14 months of renovation and an investment of £3 million, Titanic Spa opened in March 2006. The UK’s first eco spa (it has solar panels and its own bore-hole to supply water), it is located on the ground floor of the mill – above it sit 130 privately-owned apartments.

The spa vision was commissioned, and an interior designer appointed to encompass a world-class spa product incorporating state-of-the-art features while maintaining the history of the mill. Key design elements incorporated environmental features, such as local granite and slate, to create a stunning visual aspect.

AWARD WINNER: MARGO McMENEMY ROBERTSON

Posted by Annette Hanford
Dated: April 4, 2008 12:00 AM

SIMPLY THE BEST

Margo McMenemy Robertson, owner of Beauty Network in Hamilton, Scotland, is the 2007 British Beauty Therapist of the Year. Annette Hanford discovers what makes a winner

From a very early age Margo knew exactly what she wanted to do in life. After leaving school she enrolled at Scotland’s Coatbridge College, Coatbridge, to study a City & Guilds in beauty therapy and electrical epilation. From there she gained a position as a beauty therapist in a large salon approximately 25 miles from her home – the commute involved two trains and two buses.

However, the lengthy journey and long hours didn’t deter Margo, and her dedication brought her promotion to senior therapist within six months of starting. “I never thought of the commute and the long hours as a sacrifice,” she says. “To me it was an opportunity to learn my trade and advance my skills. I was willing to go the distance to achieve it.”

It is this winning attitude in all areas of beauty that has driven Margo throughout her career. Now with two salons of her own, she pursues education and training to the highest levels. Never satisfied with the status quo, Margo has always sought to improve her skills and know-ledge, and never more so than when the HND qualification was introduced in beauty therapy.

NAIL STATIONS are an essential piece of equipment, so it is important to choose the right one. PROMOTION: MOTHER'S DAY

Posted by Annette Hanford
Dated: April 7, 2008 12:00 AM

Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity for salons to push their services as a pampering gift. Annette Hanford reports

Mother’s Day is the time when sons and daughters are looking for ways to show their mums just how much they are appreciated and loved, says Dean Nathanson, MD at Caci International.

What better way, he asks, is there to show a mum how much she is thought of than to make her feel extra-special by treating her to an ultimate beauty salon makeover.

PERFECT FOR YUMMY MUMMIES

“A salon treatment is the perfect gift for an active mum, as this provides a unique opportunity for her to relax and unwind and enjoy a rare bit of self-indulgence. And who knows, she might enjoy her experience so much that she decides to treat herself to a bit of pampering on a regular basis,” he says.

MUM'S THE WORD

Whether the children are in their cots or going to college, it’s never too late for mothers to tighten their tums and pamper their skin. Annette Hanford reports

LOVE THAT TUM

The founders of Mama Mio understand the stresses and strains pregnancy puts on the body, but just as importantly, they also understand how mothers can feel about their bodies after bearing children.

“Whether your client’s baby is new or already in college, there comes a time in every mama’s life when she looks in the mirror and thinks, ‘the time has come to get my body back’,” says Tanya Mackay.

Fellow-founder Sian Sutherland adds: “There are so many wonderful aspects to being a mother, but some of the physical side-effects are not so gorgeous. With seven kids between us, we know what that feels like. While we know we will never be 18 again, we still want to be gorgeous.”

They agree: “Our theory is simple: work at what you can change for your client and relax about what you can’t. You can change the appearance of her skin – so, take control: it’s time to help your client get her body back.”

Session nail technician, Andrea Fulerton, experiences the pressures and pleasures of working with a British Pop icon

MAR%20NEW%20ANDREA%20FULERTON.jpg

Last year, I wrote in my column that I had to sign my third confidentiality form after manicuring and painting the nails of a British music icon for her new album cover and press shots. Well, the album was released, but I forgot to reveal my mystery lady’s identity – it was the gorgeous, uber-talented, world renowned and respected Annie Lennox. Here, at last, are the images for her album Songs of Mass Destruction.

I wasn’t aware of the shots being released for press use prior to the album release, so I was pretty pleased, flicking through my Sunday newspaper, and recognising the front cover from our album shoot day – complete with a glimpse of my silver nails.

WAXING LYRICAL

Posted by Annette Hanford
Dated: April 10, 2008 3:15 PM

Waxing as we all know is probably the most popular salon treatment.

Well, when I say popular, I don't mean the most luxurious, or the one most people would pick from a treatment list out of choice, but in the sense that is the most carried out treatment in salons up and down the country.

STICKY ISSUE

While writing the waxing feature for the June issue (currently i'm only a third-or so through it), it occurred to me how many brands, systems, pots, tubs and tubes are out there...

WAXING: A PAIN IN THE....?

Posted by Annette Hanford
Dated: April 16, 2008 3:40 PM

I read the following story in Monday's Daily Mail (14 April) and was shocked how -- what I consider to be such a simple procedure could go so wrong.

It may be that the therapist wasn't properly trained, or that poor Lisa B has a very low pain threshold, but come on... when has waxing ever nearly included a trip to the hospital?

This is what the paper printed...
